Sequim Weather is Hot and Sunny

Sequim weather has been hot and sunny recently, and there’s no doubt that summer is officially here.  Everyone has been outside, which means Lake Sutherland, Lake Crescent, the Dungeness River at Railroad Bridge Park the and local parks have been full of people out for a good time.  With the perfect golfing temperatures in the 70′s, golfers have been out, too.  It’s amazing how sunshine can put people in such good moods.  As I jogged around Robin Hill Park in Sequim, I said to some others in passing, “Summer is finally here,” and their response was, “It’s about time.”

Sequim Weather – The Blue Hole or Rain Shadow

There really is a blue hole or a rain shadow above Sequim, and Sequim gets one third the rainfall of Seattle.  Sequim weather and the pleasant agricultural Sequim countryside as shown in these photos has made Sequim a very popular destination retirement area.

Sequim Weather – Mountains and Water

Sequim is uniquely located on the beautiful Strait of Juan de Fuca on the north side and the Olympic Mountains to the south.  Somehow the Sequim weather creates a rain shadow effect and we are very fortunate to have a mild climate.  In this photo above, you can see the Olympic Mountains in the background and farmland in the foreground has been farmland for well over 100 years.

Summer is a great time to travel and explore.  Come and see Sequim for yourself, and enjoy our Sequim weather.

  • Sequim Weather and Spring Has Sprung

Sequim weather is a topic of conversation all over the country.  This is true.  Sequim has been written up in retirement and travel magazines for its incredible weather for at least 15 years.  The weather even has names:  The Blue Hole and The Rain Shadow.  Sequim has been named one of the 10 best places to retire in America.  There’s even a book entitled, Buying and Selling Real Estate in the Rain Shadow.  [Full disclosure:  I wrote that book.] In this photo taken today, we have definite proof that spring has sprung in Sequim.

Why is Sequim Weather So Famous?

Sequim gets one-third (1/3) the rain fall of Seattle.  It’s great.  On a day when it is raining in Seattle like cats and dogs, quite often you drive into Sequim and suddenly there is a hole and it stops raining.  I have personally observed this many times over the past 17 years.

I like to compare Sequim weather with Port Angeles weather, and you can do that right here.

  • Sequim Weather is Snow

The Sequim weather report today is snow and lots of it.  This is a bit of a surprise.  Yesterday it was dry and grassy, and today, there must be eight inches of snow in the front yard.  The Sequim School District has closed all schools for today.  It’s too snowy on the highways for buses to make their runs up and down the hills that have not yet been cleared.  This is amazing, and since it is so rare, frankly it’s kind of fun for most of us, certainly for the kids who get to stay home.

    Sequim Weather is Snow Today

    Sequim Weather

    Sequim Weather

These Sequim kids took a rare opportunity to go sledding in Robin Hill Park.  It was fun and laughter for sure, and there were some snow ball fights, too.  I was invited to ride a sled to the bottom, but I declined as I do not intentionally plan to buy the chiropractor a new boat.

As someone said, this may be the last hurrah for winter, and once it gets it out of the way, we will see a bright and sunny spring.  At least that’s our hope.  We just don’t see this kind of snow very often and certainly not this late in the year, but Sequim weather does tend to vary from year to year.  I suppose that could be said almost anywhere in the country this year.

    Sequim Weather

Sequim Weather is SnowI do have a home to show this morning at 10:30, so that should be interesting.  Aha, as I finished typing that last sentence, my client called to say she has never driven in snow before and prefers to stay home by her wood stove.  Very good.  That’s probably wise.  Radical Sequim weather should be heeded.

Most of our highways in the area are not hilly, and will be safe to drive, but many people do live up in the hills, and I am sure they will want to just stay home today and not risk driving down steep driveways or roads.  Bell Hill has some very steep roads near the top, especially on the west side of the hill.  Sunny Sequim?  Well, what can I say?  This is Sequim weather.

  • Sequim Weather is Snow

The Sequim weather forecast today was snow and wow, it was fun.  It snowed for about three hours this morning starting about 8:00, and the snow flakes were huge, measuring about one inch across without exaggeration.

    Sequim Weather Means Melting Snow

Of course with snow in the context of Sequim weather, that means it melts pretty quick.  You can laugh at the thought of me standing behind my home in the woods taking the above photograph and suddenly a large branch full of wet snow managed to find the back of my neck.  Yippee!

I’m fortunate to live adjacent to a 200 acre park with walking and jogging trails, and the Discovery Trail which runs through the park for many miles east and west.

Sequim Weather is Mild But Chilly

Winter weather in Sequim is mild compared to Alaska and Montana and many other places, but as I write this article, it is 36 degrees F.  That’s plenty chilly, and my jog required a hat and some warm jogging clothes.  But it was great getting the exercise and filling my bloodstream with fresh oxygen.

I love Sequim and the Sequim weather is full of variety and four even seasons.

  • Does it snow in Sequim?

Does it snow in Sequim?  This question does come up, especially because Sequim is also known as Sunny Sequim with the blue hole or the rain shadow. This photo was taken today, November 22nd, 2010, and obviously it does snow in Sequim.  At least this winter.  Some winters it does not.  Last winter there was never enough snow for my children and grandchildren to sled near my home.

    Snow in Sequim is Magical

For those of us who live in Sequim, this snow is welcome and fun. It doesn’t happen very often like this with such large full white snow flakes in such abundance.  We enjoy it while it lasts, because it most likely won’t last long and will melt off.  One homeowner called this “magical,” and that’s a great description. The photo doesn’t do this beautiful white snow justice, but in the live 3D version, it does appear magical.

    Sequim Winter Snow

    Snow in Sequim Covers Highways

Of course this snow in Sequim also has a downside.  It covers the highways, so many of us have simply chosen to stay home rather than slide around on highways.  For those living on the mountainside, staying at home is probably a great plan for the day.  Our county and state highway maintenance crews do an outstanding job clearing and graveling the highways and rural roads.  It’s in weather like this when many of us think about owning a four wheel drive, instead of a two wheel drive sedan. But then again, these kinds of conditions only last a couple of days out of the year, if that.  Of course, having written that, this snow could surprise all of us and last for a couple of weeks. Wouldn’t that be something.

The second photo is the parking lot of the Home Depot store in Sequim, and this third photo is the morning after, November 23rd. Sunny Sequim welcomes snow in Sequim.

  • Sequim Weather – Sequim Climate

Sequim weather is quite popular as moderate, sunny, and Sequim has been written about in magazines around the country for its sunny climate, and what many call the “blue hole” in the sky or the rain shadow.  I’ve lived in Sequim weather since 1994, and I can testify that it is sunny and our rainfall is one-third of Seattle’s precipitation.

    Sequim Weather

    Sequim Weather

    Sequim Weather is Sunny

Sequim weather in the winter is mild.  As you can see in this graphic above, on November 5th it is 49 degrees on a cloudy day.  Yes, despite the reality that Sequim is a sunny community under the blue hole in the sky, we do still get cloudy or overcast days, and believe it or not, it has actually rained here!  We just got through several days of rain.

    Sequim Weather is Moderate

Clients from California and some very hot climates (and colder as in Montana and Alaska) often ask me what winters are like in Sequim and do we get snow.  The answer is that we do get snow, but winters are not the same every year.  I recall at least one winter and probably several in which we had no snow at all.  Most winters we do get some snow, but it melts off after one or two days, although we’ve had winters where it lasted for a week or two and then melted away.

We also had a freak winter snow storm about 10 or 12 years ago that dropped several feet of snow on Sequim and shut down all the roads.  It apparently had never happened in recorded history, but it only points out that I can’t tell you exactly what this winter will be like.  It might snow a little and immediately melt off.  It might not snow at all in Sequim proper.

It does snow in the Olympic mountains, so if you buy a home way up Blue Mountain Road or Palo Alto Road or Black Diamond, you will see snow more than the rest of us.  Hurricane Ridge is a popular winter playground for those who want to go play in the snow.  That’s in the mountains above Port Angeles.

Our typical Sequim winter has many days that are in the 50′s, and at night last winter it dropped down in the coldest nights into the low 40′s and even bounced off freezing a few times but didn’t stay there long enough to freeze anything in my yard.

The Sequim weather is one of the major reasons so many retirees move here.  It is considered by many of us to be the ideal climate year round.  Sequim weather is mild and quite pleasant.

    A Message From Chuck Marunde

    Sequim Real Estate Market Reports

    From Southern CA to Sequim

My husband and I went to Sequim intending to interview several Realtors to find one to help us locate and buy a home in Sequim. We knew we wanted someone we could trust and who would have our best interests in mind. Since we would be handling the transaction from S. California this was very important to us. We met Chuck and looked no further. We felt a connection right away and spent some time looking at homes together so Chuck could get a feel for what we wanted. Well, we left Sequim having made an offer on a home which the owner accepted. Chuck has helped us through the purchase process. We are positive it would not have gone so smoothly without his help. We give him 4 thumbs up. Cathie and Wally

    From Georgia to Sequim

My husband and I were interested in relocating from Georgia to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, and while we were staying at an Inn in Port Angeles, Washington, the Innkeepers gave us the name of Chuck Marunde as a contact for helping us with our real estate needs. Upon meeting Chuck we hit it off and immediately became friends and felt a real sense of trust in Chuck handling our wants and needs as far as real estate goes. We gave him, for lack of a better word, "unrealistic" demands in this unstable economy, and by the next morning Chuck had a list of properties that would fit those "demands". Chuck was able to help us not only find a home and property that suited our needs as a large family, but he went above and beyond what he needed to do to ensure that our offer was presented (and accepted) in a timely fashion. In the past 25 years of dealing in real estate, Chuck is, without a doubt, the most prompt, reliable, trustworthy, and friendly professional we have ever done business with! We will always use Chuck from here on out for all our real estate needs. Larry and April Leach Sequim, Washington

    From California to Sequim

"Selling a house remotely is not an easy task especially in this market. But Chuck sold our house and made the transaction effortless. The people that he found were perfect, too, and that makes us very happy. Now the weight of having to sell our house is off our shoulders and we can finally feel settled and enjoy our new location. Chuck is our HERO!" Phil and Janet

    Why Chuck Marunde?

Andy Romano is a successful motion picture character actor with over 40 years in "the Biz." Mr. Romano has a home in beautiful Santa Barbara, California, but he chooses to live most of the time here in Sequim, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula in the great Pacific Northwest. Why? In his own words, "Because it's even more beautiful and surrounded by more beauty in this incredibly peaceful and quiet place. With respect to real estate agents or brokers, well my friend Chuck Marunde, owner of Sequim and Port Angeles Real Estate, is hands down the best there is." Andy Romano

    Client Testimony

"I’ve known Chuck Marunde for several years. My wife and I bought and sold one house through his services, and now have another listed through him for sale. Whether Chuck was representing us as the buyer or seller, I am confident he always had our best interests at heart. He helped us set or negotiate a reasonable price, and made sure there was a clear and open line of communication. He responded rapidly to email and phone calls and always knew the best person to contact for the various services involved in a transaction. I have worked with quite a few real estate agents and Chuck is right at the top of my list of good ones. Actually, Chuck is first and foremost just a good person, and he carries his personal honesty and integrity over into his profession. He has the greatest depth of experience in real estate of any agent or broker I have known. His years of practicing real estate law prior to becoming a broker are evident in the meticulous care he takes with the process and documentation. I am impressed by the way Chuck has integrated internet services into his real estate business. He probably knows more about this process than any other realtor in the country. In this tight market it is important to use every possible means to spread the word about available properties…to reach the few people who might be interested in a particular property." Steve L.

    Glad for Atty Experience

“When Chuck told me I not only got a Realtor with decades of experience, but I also got his knowledge and experience as a real estate attorney for 20 years totally free, I couldn’t believe it. But it was true, and I strongly recommend Chuck to anyone dealing with real estate.” Susan

    Buyer’s Agent

"We contacted Chuck to be our buyer’s agent for our purchase of a home in the Sequim area. Throughout the entire process he was enjoyable to work with, and we found him to be exceptionally knowledgeable, thorough and diligent on our behalf. He was in constant contact and always readily available and responsive by phone and email. We were buying from out of state and unable to cover the various steps in the process, so we really appreciated Chuck’s willingness to personally handle what we needed to have done. He coordinated and attended the various inspections, followed up on our numerous questions and requests relating to the sale (including measuring rooms and sending photos), and even conducted the final walk through of the property for us. We particularly valued his advice on a number of different issues that arose – and that he handled for us – during the transaction. In short, we were very impressed with Chuck and would recommend him highly to anyone who is considering purchasing (or selling) in the Sequim area." Ed and Sharlene

    Financial Planner Endorsement

“Chuck Marunde’s level of expertise in real estate investment is amazing. His knowledge, experience and legal training have given me a dramatic advantage in real estate investing. He works hard to stay on the cutting edge of real estate marketing, sound advice and value-added service for his clients.” Kirk Wald, Financial Planner

    Enjoyable Experience

"Our experience in working with Chuck Marunde was very enjoyable, he is a knowledgeable, dedicated professional who knows the real estate market extremely well. The thing we like most about Chuck is that he is a realist, he is very well versed in what is going on in the current volatile market and he understands "true value" in the market. Chuck is a honest and loyal leader in his field who really goes the extra mile to please the customer at every level. Having the legal background is a real bonus when it comes to negotiating a real estate transaction, Chuck is the guy you want in your corner when you come to the buying table." Sara and Ken

    From Arizona

"We are ex-Washington residents who currently live in Arizona. We had been searching the Puget Sound area four years for a waterfront property to build a retirement home when we first contacted Chuck Marunde through his website. We had made multiple trips to various areas but most of the Realtors we contacted simply sent us an email, provided no follow up and did next to nothing to help us locate a property. On our first trip to Port Angeles, after connecting with Chuck, we purchased our dream property. We now own a high bank waterfront lot overlooking the Straight of Jaun de Fuca, and are excited to become part of the Peninsula community." Paul and Linda

    I’m Coming to Sequim

"Chuck, I visit your site just about every day to see what is going on in Sequim. Although I have never been there, it is on my short list for a retirement home in 2014, when I turn 66. (Save me a house!). I do hope you are still in business then so you can help me find a little house for me and my cats with a view of some water. :-)" Ruth

    From New Mexico to Sequim

Over a year ago, during a visit to the Olympic Game Farm, we developed what we eventually called the “Sequim Syndrome.” We live in New Mexico and decided Sequim was where we wanted to live in retirement. On our second visit to Sequim, we met with Chuck and asked him to help us. Chuck's web site provides such amazing search capabilities. Chuck's site also contains a 1000 blog postings and a real estate video series detailing buying real estate in Sequim. We bought Chuck's book about Sequim real estate and set out to follow his advice carrying on an ongoing email and phone conversation with Chuck. Doing our due diligence “Marunde style” and using his MLS search site, we came up with about 50 homes that met our needs. We narrowed the list down to 15 properties that best met our needs. We came back to Sequim a third time with our list in hand, and Chuck spent two days with us showing us all the homes on our list. Not only did Chuck help us find that dream home, he spent time to educate us about the quality of construction, fair market values of various properties, home layouts, and the joys of Sequim living. We had a great time as we traveled from house to house. By mid afternoon of the second day, my wife said we had found “the house.” Chuck helped us draft our offer and sent our offer to the seller's agent. It turned out there was a second offer made on the property at the same time. Chuck's help to make a clean offer paid off. At breakfast two days later, we got a call from Chuck saying our offer had been accepted by the sellers. We are now back home in New Mexico. Chuck attends every inspection on our behalf, updating us at every turn by email and phone. Our dream home is becoming a reality because of Chuck and because we were smart enough to follow his advice. We absolutely would NOT have been able to do this without Chuck Marunde's expertise and enthusiasm. We recommend Chuck to everyone planning a move to Sequim, Port Angeles, or anywhere on the Olympic Peninsula. Chuck is a gold mine of information and expertise for home buyers everywhere, not just on the Olympic Peninsula. Larry and Shirley
