I understand why Sequim real estate has become such an attraction for retired folks. I visited Sequim and immediately fell in love. I was at Starbucks and I saw the woman of my dreams. We have been corresponding. But honestly, Sequim is beautiful and I love the climate and the Olympic Mountains and the water views. Sequim has so much to offer. I’m planning my transition now.

I’ve dug deep into the foreclosures listed for sale in both Sequim and Port Angeles, but your articles about foreclosures and why it is hard to find one you would really want to live in are all quite true. You’re right that for someone who is retired and wants a nice retirement home, it is quite unlikely that there is a foreclosure that would be suitable. There are so many more homes in the MLS that are not foreclosures.

In winter, the air needs to be moist, but the moist air will breed bacterial growth. Because my home bathroom drainage is bad, I found growth in the bathroom behind the toilet and sink. Until now I did not know how harmful mold could be.

The city of Sequim (pronounced “s’kwim”) is located along the Dungeness River at the base of the Olympic Mountains, on the north Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. The first European to arrive in the Dungeness Valley region was Spanish explorer Ensign Manuel Quimper, who entered the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1790 but did not settle there. The valley’s first settlers came in the 1850’s; they included pioneers from New England, the South, and the Midwest, as well as more Europeans. The area that would become Sequim had an unexpected climate that brought little rain, and it wasn’t until the town’s first settlers established irrigation canals in the 1890’s that the arid prairies would be ripe for farming. One of Sequim’s unique crops is lavender; the city is known as the “Lavender Capital of North America” and has over 25 lavender farms. Sequim residents celebrate their agricultural past and present with two yearly festivals—the 111 year-old Irrigation Festival and the Sequim Lavender Festival.

Surveyor’s reports aren’t always accurate. I’ve had some that recommend I get flood insurance because I was “at flooding risk” from the nearby stream – the stream is less than a metre wide and half as deep- the house is uphill from the stream by at least 35 meters. Ridiculous

I am a past real estate investor but since moving to the Midwest have not been able to find any property that can make monthly cash flow. For that reason I am waiting until the foreclosures work their way through the real estate market. According to the Realtors Association, there is still 2 years of normal supply in foreclosures waiting to happen. That means one must be patient in waiting for a good real estate investment.

My wife and I are very impressed with Sequim. We were there in 1990, but it sounds like it’s grown since then, although it still seems to have the same small town and country type setting. Look forward to coming up this summer. Hope to see you then Chuck.
